The Challenge

Smartphone photography had become ubiquitous, but the soulless clarity of modern phone cameras left many users craving the warmth, grain, and character of vintage and retro film photography. Users wanted a tool that could recreate that aesthetic authentically, both in real-time through the camera and in post-editing on existing photos.

The Solution

Lomograph is a vintage-inspired live camera and photo editing app for Android, combining real-time camera filters, retro overlays, and a full image adjustment suite to give every photo the timeless, film-like quality of classic Lomo photography. With 10 million+ installs, Lomograph became one of the most trusted retro camera apps on the Play Store.

As an Android Engineer, I worked on the live camera filter pipeline, legacy architecture modernization, and the full gallery editing feature set.

What I Built & Improved

Live Camera Filters: Implemented real-time Lomo-style filters applied directly to the live camera feed, delivering an authentic vintage viewfinder experience before the shot is even taken

Camera Overlays: Built overlay rendering on the live camera feed for film-style borders, light leaks, and retro texture effects

Timestamp Rendering: Added image timestamp feature to give photos an authentic retro date-stamp aesthetic

Legacy Architecture Modernization: Upgraded the existing codebase to support applying filters and adjustments to gallery images, expanding the app's editing capabilities beyond the camera

Gallery Image Editor: Implemented full post-capture editing suite including filters, stickers, brightness, contrast, vignette, saturation, and overlay controls

Image Adjustments: Fine-grained controls for brightness, vignette, contrast, and saturation giving users precise creative control over their edits

Impact

Delivered real-time vintage camera and editing experiences to 10 million+ users worldwide, contributing to one of the Play Store's most beloved retro photography apps.
